As a blonde with fine hair, grease has always been a problem. It is so noticeable on blondes. Less than 24 hours and my hair is noticeably stringy.

I’m not really a person who uses a lot of hair products. I basically let my hair air dry after a shower, use a comb, and I’m good to go. Very low maintenance.

This DIY Dry Shampoo is the king of low maintenance. You probably have the ingredients at home and it’s so easy!

An old trick

Ever since I was in Jr. High or so, I found a trick that helped prolong my hair between washes. We didn’t have all the dry shampoo options there are now, but we did have one thing. I think this tip came from Seventeen, Teen, or even Sassy magazine. Anyone remember those?

In a pinch, baby powder is the way to go to soak up that extra oil and fluff up greasy hair. I used it for years! The only problem was the smell. The baby bottom smell always made me self-conscious.

Better DIY Dry Shampoo

If you don’t have baby powder, and you need a dry shampoo asap or you’re just looking for a better or less expensive version than store-bought, there is something even better.

With just one ingredient, that you probably have at home, you can DIY dry shampoo that will work great!

I’ve researched recipes and have seen a couple suggestions. However, nothing is as easy as this!

Two ingredients

This very simple DIY Dry Shampoo is really just one ingredient – cornstarch. Really, you could just use that.

I have seen others prefer organic arrowroot. I don’t know about you, but I have no idea what that is and I don’t have it on hand. I do, however, know exactly how easy cornstarch is.

The other ingredient is optional, but I love adding a couple essential oils to make it smell good. Much better than the baby powder smell!

Ok, so seriously, that is all there is to it. I also love how it works!

I do like my Dove dry shampoo, but when I’m home or just want to get my hair to last a liiiiitle longer, I go with the cornstarch.

Essential Oils

The scent you use and your combination of essential oils is totally up to you. You can make this whatever you’d like and use your favorite.

My favorite is lavendar and peppermint. It’s so good! I think part of the reason I like to use my DIY Dry Shampoo so much is because I love the scent! Lavendar and peppermint leave your hair smelling so fresh.

Light or dark hair?

If you’re blonde like me, using this DIY Dry Shampoo or even baby powder is easy. They are white, so they work great with our hair.

What about those of you who have darker hair? Adding a white dry shampoo can leave it looking a little chalky.

I have seen many recipes suggest cocoa powder, which I think would make your hair smell delicious. However, I have heard that it does not smell as good on a sweaty scalp. Another option is to use a bronzer or dark loose powder.

I wish I had an answer for you, but I’m blonde and it’s all I know!

DIY Dry Shampoo Directions

The measurements for this dry shampoo really don’t matter at all. Considering it is mainly one ingredient, you can make as much or as little as you’d like.

For the essential oils, I would say about 5-10 drops of each is a good place to start, depending on how much your making. Just add the drops, shake it up to mix, and add more as needed.

Bottle it up

My favorite thing about this DIY Dry Shampoo is that I keep it in a squeeze bottle and it makes it so easy to apply.

These bottles are easy to find on Amazon and are typically used in the kitchen for condiments and things like that. This set of bottles even comes with cute little chalkboard labels. However, they store well in your bathroom, are easy to grasp, and with a little shake or squeeze you can control the amount that comes out.

If you don’t have a plastic bottle like this, I’ve seen others who put it in a small container and use a makeup brush to apply. This is another way with even more control, but I like not having to open a lid or use another tool.

How to apply

If you’ve used dry shampoo before, you probably have a system. If you haven’t used a powder before, there are probably some tips you will find helpful.

First, shake or squeeze out small amounts of the dry shampoo to the areas where your hair is greasy. If you need a lot of coverage, it helps to section off the hair and add to each layer working toward the top.

Once you have a desired amount of powder on your hair, used your hands to massage it into your scalp. Once it is worked into your hair enough that it won’t shake loose, turned your head upside down. This really helps to get it worked in and adds volume to your hair while incorporating the dry shampoo more evenly.

Add more to areas as needed and style your hair as normal.

I hope this is just what you need to get you through. It was a game changer for me. So easy and I’m a huge fan!
